More than a year after the introduction of the Telethon Open Access Policy,  and we would like to take this opportunity to summarize the procedure to follow when submitting an original work of research supported by a grant from Telethon.

1. Before submitting the article: check the journal of choice’s  OA policy

2. During the submission process  select / request the most appropriate OA option

3. When the article is accepted, fill in the Mod-OA and send it, together with a copy of the manuscript or abstract, to openaccess@telethon.it  to ask Telethon to sponsor the OA fees  (only if necessary, see above Step 2).

Communicate the publication as soon as possible to papers@telethon.it

Details:

1. Options to verify the policy of the magazine and the actions required of the author:

2. The journals can be divided into the following categories:

  • The journal is an OA journal (e.g., Plos, BMC): all articles are available by default in OA from the date of publication. Therefore, the payment required to publish in these journals is supported by Telethon (see above point 3).
  • The journal offers the possibility of making the article freely available in PMC/Europe PMC within 6 months of publication. In some cases this procedure is applied by default by the journal (no action is required by the Author); in other cases it is a free service offered by the journal but must be EXPRESSLY REQUESTED by the Author during the submission phase (e.g., the Deposition Service offered by NPG for Nature, EMBO, etc); in further cases it is the Telethon-funded Author that must deposit – at no cost - the article in Europe PMC through the Europe PMC Plus site (“SELF ARCHIVE”).
  • The journal has an embargo period of longer than 6 monthsbut on payment of an OA fee immediately renders the article available both on the publisher’s website and in PMC/Europe PMC. In these cases the option “Open Access” must be chosen during the submission process; the fee will be paid by Telethon (following the process described in point 3 above).
2-3. These steps must be carried out respectively before acceptance and publication of the article. Nonetheless, if the steps are not carried out in the right order, contact the Editor of the journal as soon as possible and let Telethon know by sending an email to openaccess@telethon.it.
