We work for the wellbeing of all neuromuscular disease patients. That's why we support NEMO Clinical Centres.

NeMO centres are clinics managed in partnership with hospitals and other organisations engaged in funding research and care provision.

NEMO (NeuroMuscular Omnicentre) clinical centres provide specialised services for people with neuromuscular diseases. Their aim is to meet patients’ overall needs, in terms of both clinical services and assistance. Services are provided by a multi-disciplinary team of neuromuscular disorder specialists with expertise in treating all aspects of such diseases.

To date there are seven active centres throughout Italy: Milan, Arenzano (Genoa), Gussago (Brescia), Rome, Naples, Pergine Valsugana (Trento) and Ancona.

In 2021, the NeMOLab was inaugurated in the centre of Milan, Italy's first technological pole for the research and development of highly innovative solutions, capable of responding to the needs of those living with neurodegenerative and neuromuscular pathologies.

How we take care of people with neuromuscular diseases?

  • Teams of specialists (including cardiologists, neurologists, pulmonologists, orthopaedists and physiotherapists) are able to treat patients with disorders of different origin and severity.
  • In addition to care, NeMO centres provide psychological support to patients and their families, to help them understand and manage their disabilities.
  • The physicians apply their expertise to help patients to improve their quality of life.
  • Health professionals at the centres help patients so that, when they go home, they have more self-awareness and a greater sense of independence.

NEMO Clinical Centres in Italy

MILANO
The NeMO centre at Niguarda Hospital in Milan opened in 2007 and admitted its first patient on 28 January 2008. The NeMO centre is an operational and functioning example of horizontal subsidiarity: a successful social enterprise. It is a common good, and a forma mentis. It meets real needs, hitherto awaiting responses, and has proved to be a replicable project.

The Milan centre was established as a partnership among the non-profit organisation Fondazione Serena Onlus, a participatory foundation established in 2005 by the Italian muscular dystrophy association (UILDM), Fondazione Telethon and Niguarda Hospital (until 2013). The Italian amyotrophic lateral sclerosis association (AISLA) joined the partnership in 2007, the SMA Families Association in 2008 and the non-profit association Slanciamoci in 2014.

ARENZANO
The intensive rehabilitation unit for neuromuscular diseases at La Colletta Hospital in Arenzano (Genoa) replicates the NeMO approach. The centre operates in partnership with the regional local government authority, Regione Liguria, and the Genoese local health authority, ASL3. The clinical objective of this new experimental management mode, is to offer highly specialised ‘one-stop shop’ services in close coordination with existing local services to provide multidisciplinary, inter-professional care from the moment of diagnosis.

Fondazione Serena Onlus manages the centre, which was founded in 2005 by the Italian muscular dystrophy association (UILDM) and Fondazione Telethon. The Italian amyotrophic lateral sclerosis association (AISLA) joined the partnership in 2007, the SMA Families Association in 2008 and the non-profit association Slanciamoci in 2014.

ROMA
NeMO centre in Rome has a team of specialists who provide inpatient, day hospital and outpatient services for patients of all ages suffering from neuromuscular disorders, covering their needs from diagnosis through to assistance at all stages of the disease. The centre is located in the M wing of the Gemelli University Hospital.  The centre hosts an area dedicated to the provision of care for adults (fourth floor) and another specialised in paediatric care (third floor).

This NeMO centre was established as a partnership among Fondazione Serena Onlus, a participatory foundation established in 2005 by the Italian muscular dystrophy association (UILDM), Fondazione Telethon and Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli. The Italian amyotrophic lateral sclerosis association (AISLA) joined the partnership in 2007, the SMA Families Association 2008 and the non-profit association Slanciamoci in 2014.

BRESCIA
In September 2020, the Brescia branch of the NeMO Centre was inaugurated in Gussago (Brescia). The Centre will care for approximately 800 people a year in the Brescia area and neighbouring provinces, providing 16 beds to assist children and adults with neuromuscular disease at no charge to patients. NeMO Brescia was created thanks to the assignment received in December 2019 from Fondazione Serena (the managing body of NeMO Clinical Centres), by the Agenzia di Tutela della Salute (ATS) of the Lombardy city.

NAPOLI
Work on the NeMO Centre in Naples, located at the Monaldi Hospital, was completed in summer 2020. The new centre is characterised by a physical-rehabilitation core, to which the neurological, pulmonary and cardiological specialities mainly belong, and is able to offer state-of-the-art multidisciplinary care. NeMO Napoli is the result of the public-private management experimentation agreement between Fondazione Serena (managing body of NeMO Clinical Centres), Regione Campania and Azienda Ospedaliera Specialistica dei Colli signed in February 2019.

TRENTO
In February 2021, the NeMO Trento Centre will be inaugurated at the "Villa Rosa" hospital in Pergine Valsugana, Trento. The new NeMO has 1,500 square metres of floor space and 14 beds to care for children and adults. The opening of NeMO Trento is the result of a public-private management trial agreement between the Autonomous Province of Trento, the Provincial Health Services Agency and Fondazione Serena, the managing body of the NeMO Clinical Centres.

ANCONA
The inauguration of NeMO Ancona's spaces took place in March 2022. The new center was created to meet the care needs of a patient community of more than 1,000 children and adults from the Marche region, joined by about 2,200 people from neighboring regions, with a major impact on health care in central Italy. Located at the "Torrette" Hospital, the Center features 12 beds for ordinary hospitalization, 2 for day hospital and outpatient services, 1 rehabilitation gymnasium and 2 common rooms designed for relaxation but also for devoting time to social life. The 14 different clinical specialties in the department will accompany the person at every stage of the disease: from diagnosis, to the activation of treatment and rehabilitation pathways, to periodic checks and follow-ups.
