Research

The Telethon Foundation’s aim is to finance the best scientific research in Italy, so as to find cures for genetic diseases, as described in the Strategic Research Plan. In order to do this, the funds raised so far have been invested in more than 2000 research projects and four Telethon Institutes. Some of the results from the research funded by Telethon have been transferred to the pharmaceutical industry, in the form of patents, to guarantee their development and eventual public release as drugs, therapies or diagnostic instruments to cure genetic diseases.
To guarantee that the funds raised are spent in the best possible way, research projects submitted for financing are subjected to a rigorous evaluation process by an independent group of international experts. Every two years all our financed researchers gather for our Scientific Convention, where they describe their current and previous research activity, providing a broad vision of Telethon research and illustrating progress made and future potential in the field of genetic diseases.
Since 1990, Telethon researchers have contributed towards furthering knowledge on the causes and possible therapies for more than 400 genetic diseases; see the summary of the most important results achieved. To see the details of all the financed projects please use the Project Search Engine. | |
