Telethon research does not promise miracles, instead it moves towards goals that get closer and closer to achieving cures for genetic disorders.
It does this by relying on a group of internationally renowned scientists that make up the Telethon medical-scientific Committee, in choosing the worthiest projects. Alongside scientific qualities, the Committee uses another two other important criteria in evaluating proposed projects: their relevance to Telethon's mission, and their closeness to a cure, that is: those projects with a greater possibility of generating information useful to developing or improving a therapy.
This method has proved successful and has allowed, thanks to the generosity of millions of Italians and hundreds of businesses, 14 children affected by Ada-Scid, a grave hereditary immune deficiency disorder, to be cured. Clinical experimentation has been initiated for other pathologies.
Over the years the work of Telethon's researchers has had a notable impact on the understanding of 454 genetic diseases.
It is also possible to browse 2,266 projects funded by Telethon since 1990 in an on-line application.
Telethon offers an on-line support service for researchers who want to receive funding, and for all those who are already beneficiaries, where as well as consulting calls for grant applications and the operative selection criteria, it is also possible to access a management system for assigned funding.
