The Fondazione Telethon funds three scientific research institutes (TIGEM, HSR-TIGET and DTI) and an institute of applied research (Tecnothon), in which excellent research is conducted; all three are highly competitive at the international level.

The Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM) was established in 1994 and is headquartered in Naples. Directed by Andrea Ballabio, its mission focuses on understanding the mechanisms underlying genetic diseases and developing preventive and therapeutic strategies

The San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (HSR-TIGET) is based in Milan and was established in 1995 from a collaboration between the Fondazione San Raffaele del Monte Tabor Foundation and Telethon. Directed by Luigi Naldini, it is a center of excellence for gene therapy of genetic diseases.

The Dulbecco Telethon Institute (DTI) is a virtual institute created in 1999 to provide a select group of researchers with an independent career. Named after the Nobel Prize winner for Medicine Renato Dulbecco, the DTI recruits bright and promising researchers, who are insured salary and research funds for 5 years to work in Italian institutions of their choice. The work of the DTI researchers does not focus on a particular disease, but has as a common denominator research on genetic diseases.

The Tecnothon is a laboratory for technological research, established in 1994 in Sarcedo (Vi) to design and build functional prototypes of aids for the disabled and for improving existing ones. The general objective of the institute is to promote the autonomy of people with physical disabilities and their families in all their daily activities.
