Research

2351 projects in research fields of 459 different genetic diseases, with a direct investment of more than €326 million and 7964 scientific articles published. These are the numbers that make Telethon an internationally recognized of biomedical research foundation.

Funding
The excellent results secured by Telethon research are the result of a system of selection and funding of projects based on merit, a meter used in the performance evaluation of Telethon’s three biomedical research institutions (TIGEM,TIGET and the Dulbecco Telethon Institute) and the Institute of Applied Research (Tecnothon) founded by Telethon, in calls dedicated to external research and external collaborations with other entities that fund scientific research (AFM, JDRF, UILDM).

Alliances
Since the end of 2005 Telethon has participated in the creation of three organisations with their own independent statutes, dedicated to areas of biomedical research: the  Serena Foundation, the Bio.for.me  Foundation  and  Arisla.
The Telethon Foundation is also one of  the 21 TREAT-NMD partners, an international network of excellence in the area of research into cures for neuromuscular diseases.

The convention
Every two years all of Telethon's funded researchers meet up in a Science convention  to share the results of their labours, and identify any possible synergy between the study of muscular dystrophy and other genetic disorders.

Patents and Open Access to scientific publications
The Telethon Technology Transfer office was founded to promote, develop, and bring to the market medicines, therapies, or diagnostic apparatus for the treatment of genetic disorders, developed thanks to the work of researchers funded by Telethon.
Since July 2010, all the scientific publications produced by Telethon researchers are made freely available in an online archive.

Patient Associations
Telethon's scientific offices provide a free genetic consultation service, "Filo Diretto", direct contact with the patients, and support for all those groups of genetic disorder sufferers who want to reach or establish an association whose aim is to improve the lives of the afflicted and finance research.
